Yaz Side Effects
Yaz, Yasmin and are marketed by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. for prevention of unwanted pregnancy, PMDD and treatment of moderate acne in women who also want birth control. Yaz, Yasmin and the generic form Ocella contain the progestin drospirenone. Drospirenone has antimineralocorticoid properties and can increase blood potassium levels, known as hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia may result in potentially serious heart and health problems, as stated in the October 2008 FDA Warning Letter to Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. This letter cited the FDA's serious concerns regarding advertising minimizing the risks associated with taking Yaz and referenced "numerous warnings associated with the use of Yaz including, but not limited to, venous and arterial thrombotic and thromboembolic events (such as myocardial infarction, thromboembolism, stroke), hepatic neoplasia, gallbladder disease, and hypertension". In many cases this only comes to medical attention after serious complications have developed. Most Yaz problems stem from hyperkalemia (as stated in the FDA Warning Letter dated 10/3/2008). Hyperkalemia may cause blood clots, stroke, heart attack, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and gallbladder disease among others.
The most serious side effects associated with using Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella are:
- Heart Attack
- Pulmonary Embolism
- Deep Vein Thrombosis
- Gallbladder Disease
Symptoms that could indicate potential blood clots include:
- Sudden severe headaches
- Unusual swelling or pain in the legs or arms
- Sharp or crushing chest pain or coughing blood
- Eye problems such as blurred or double vision or complete loss of vision
- Pain in the back of the lower leg
The side effects of Yaz can be worsened based on several health and risk factors. Factors that increase Yaz health risks include: if you are over 35 years of age, diabetes, smoking more than 15 cigarettes a day, and high level of blood cholesterol or fat.
