Yaz Health RisksYaz Health Risks

There are numerous warnings associated with the use of Yaz including, but not limited to, venous and arterial thrombotic and thromboembolic events (such as myocardial infarction, thromboembolism, stroke), hepatic neoplasia, gallbladder disease, and hypertension. Moreover, Yaz has additional risks because it contains the progestin, drospirenone. Drospirenone has antimineralocorticoid properties which can lead to hyperkalemia in high risk patients, which may result in potentially serious heart and health problems. Women taking Yaz must be concerned about the drug interactions that could increase potassium, in addition to the drug interactions common to all combination oral contraceptives.

Yaz Blood Clots Risks

Many of the severe health risks presented by Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella arise from blood clots originating from Hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia is a medical condition where the blood has abnormally elevated levels of potassium. Severe hyperkalemia can cause blood clots, resulting in problems such as stroke, heat attack (myocardial infarction) or deep vein thrombosis.

Yaz Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Health Risks

Venous thrombosis is a condition in which a blood clot (thrombus) forms in a vein. Most commonly, venous thrombosis occurs in the "deep veins" in the legs, thighs, or pelvis and is known as a deep vein thrombosis, or DVT.

The most important consequence of a DVT is a pulmonary embolism (see below). The related subject matter of PE will be discussed below.

The term "venous thromboembolism" is sometimes used when discussing both DVT and pulmonary embolism.

Yaz Pulmonary Embolism Health Risks

Pulmonary Embolism refers to obstruction of the pulmonary artery or one of its branches by a thrombus (clot). Acute pulmonary embolism is a common and often fatal disease. Unfortunately, symptoms and signs of pulmonary embolism are highly variable, nonspecific, and common among patients with and without pulmonary embolism. Thus, additional testing is needed to confirm or exclude the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism.

Risk factors that promote the development of Deep Vein Thrombosis (see above) also increase the risk for pulmonary embolism.

Yaz Heart Attack & Stroke Health Risks

The risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke after taking Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella stems from the risks of hyperkalemia and ensuing blood clots. Should abnormal blood clots form as a result of severe hyperkalemia they may dislodge and travel through the bloodstream, becoming lodged in either the heart or brain and blocking the flow of blood, causing a heart attack or stroke.

You should seek medical attention if you experience any of the following:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; unusual hoarseness); breast lump or discharge; calf or leg pain, swelling, or tenderness; change in the amount of urine produced; chest pain or heaviness; confusion; coughing of blood; fainting; irregular heartbeat; left-sided jaw, neck, shoulder, or arm pain; mental or mood changes (eg, depression); migraines; missed menstrual period; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; persistent, severe, or recurring headache or dizziness; persistent vaginal spotting; severe or persistent trouble sleeping; severe stomach pain or tenderness; shortness of breath; slurred speech; sudden severe vomiting; swelling of the fingers, hands, legs, or ankles; symptoms of liver problems (eg, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fever, dark urine, pale stools, loss of appetite); unusual or severe vaginal bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; vaginal irritation or discharge; vision changes (eg, sudden vision loss, double vision).
